  • Check the cap seal is not broken before first use. If it is, do not use this medicine.

Possible side-effects This medicine is unlikely to cause side-effects unless your child is allergic to the ingredients. If your child experiences any of the following, stop giving the medicine and seek immediate medical help:

  • Unexplained wheezing or difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, neck or throat (severe allergic reactions). If your child experiences any other side-effects or you are not sure about anything, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS FOR: This medicine is a non-drowsy cough syrup, which relieves:

  • Dry coughs
  • Tickly coughs
  • Sore throats BEFORE GIVING THIS MEDICINE TO YOUR CHILD: This product is suitable for most people, but a few people should not use it. If you are in any doubt contact your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD THIS MEDICINE:
  • If they are under 1 year old.
  • If they are allergic to any of the ingredients. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST If your child has an intolerance to some sugars. PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING You can take this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. IF ANYONE HAS TAKEN TOO MUCH If anyone has taken too much of this product, contact a doctor or your nearest Accident & Emergency Department (Casualty), taking this pack with you.   • Give the dose 3 or 4 times within 24 hours, if needed.
  • If your child does not feel better or starts to feel worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU FORGET TO GIVE THE MEDICINE If you forget a dose, give the next dose when needed, DO NOT give a double dose. SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS
  • This product contains 2.15 g glucose and 1.7 g sucrose in each 5 ml, which may be harmful to the teeth. If you have been told by a doctor that your child has an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before using this medicine. This should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.
  • Carbohydrate content of this medicine is 3.4 g per 5 ml.
  • This medicine contains 3.53 mg propylene glycol (E1520) in each 5 ml dose, which is equivalent to 0.71 mg/ml.
  • This medicine contains 10 mg sodium benzoate (E211) in each 5 ml which is equivalent to 2 mg/ml.
  • This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per 5 ml, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'.
  • This medicine contains 0.000053 mg benzyl alcohol in each 5 ml which is equivalent to 0.000011 mg/ml. Benzyl alcohol may cause allergic reactions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you have a liver or kidney disease. This is because large amounts of benzyl alcohol can build-up in your body and may cause side-effects (called "metabolic acidosis"). Do not use for more than a week in young children (less than 3 years old), unless advised by your doctor or pharmacist. This is due to an increased risk due to accumulation in young children.

Other Ingredients are: Citric acid monohydrate, sodium benzoate (E211), anthocyanin, blackcurrant flavour and juice (containing propylene glycol (E1520) and benzyl alcohol), liquid glucose and purified water. What the medicine looks like CALCOUGH® Children's Syrup is a clear, purple liquid available in 125 ml bottles.

4.1. Therapeutic indications

For the relief of irritating, tickling dry coughs and sore throats.

4.2. Posology and method of administration

Posology

Adults, elderly and children over 5 years: 10ml

Children 1 - 5 years: 5ml

The dose may be repeated three or four times a day.

Children under one year: Not to be given to children under 1 year.

Method of Administration

For oral administration.

4.3. Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients listed in section 6.1.

Do not give to children under one year.

4.4. Special warnings and precautions for use

Diabetics should take note that sucrose and glycerol may affect blood sugar levels.

Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.

If symptoms persist for more than 3 days or get worse, patients should stop use and consult a doctor.

No clinically significant interactions known.

4.6. Fertility, pregnancy and lactation

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established, but is not considered to constitute a hazard during these periods.

4.7. Effects on ability to drive and use machines

This product has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

4.8. Undesirable effects

Immune system disorder: hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Management:
